Call for Articles for first edition

Design Afrika: Journal of Design, Design Research and Design Education

The journal aims to facilitate interdisciplinary research and discourse around contemporary design practice, philosophy, research and education that centers perspectives from Afrika and the Global South while situating such dialogue within an international arena. Our journal is relevant to design practitioners, researchers, educators, theorists and historians invested in critical engagement with issues pertaining to the broader field of design and with furthering design and design education as a catalyst for positive social change.

2024 Deadlines

19 April: 1st call
17 May: 2nd call
18 June: 3rd call
31st July: Submission of full edited articles
30 August: Feedback from Peer Review process
30 September: Final submission deadline of corrected articles.
1 December: Publication of 1st edition.

Criteria for submission

Full edited articles of original work that do not exceed 8000 words should be submitted on the website www.defsa.co.za by the 31 July 2024.
Articles will be double blind peer reviewed by the editorial board of the journal and selected academics.
In articles that incorporate images, authors need to provide:
i)    Proof of authorship
ii)    Evidence that use of the image is granted

The decision of the Editors is final. Authors are requested to ensure that articles align to the DEFSA style guide. The journal template can be downloaded at the top of this page.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Your submission must comply with the following to be considered.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • Submissions must not be more than 8000 words, excluding references, abstract and annexures.
  • The submission file must be in Microsoft Word, using the template from the DEFSA Member Zone (www.defsa.co.za). The template provides guidance on the sections required, references etc.
  • Before submitting, please separate the Cover sheet with author names, and save this as a PDF. It is uploaded separately.
  • Remove all identifying author information from the submission file. This includes the cover page, author names, affiliations, or anything that will assist the reviewer to identify the author.
  • Formatting requirements: Single line spacing, 12pt font. Use italics and NOT underlined (except with URL addresses); ALL illustrations, figures, and tables are within the text at the appropriate place, not at the end.
  • The text must adhere to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined below

Abstract

For each article, the author must provide a 200 to 300-word abstract in English. As the Journal is of interest to a multilingual community, the English abstract may be followed by additional abstracts in African indigenous languages.

References

The abbreviated Harvard system of citation must be used. References should be published materials accessible to the public. Internal technical reports may be cited only if they are easily accessible (i.e. you give an Internet address within your citation). Proprietary information may not be cited.
